Concert showcases young musicians

In addition to showcasing up-and-coming string players, the Athens Youth Symphony's 10th Spring Concert will feature the youngest soloist to ever perform with the ensemble.

Younger players, who comprise the organization's Philharmonia and Concert Strings groups, will open the concert, set for 4 p.m. Sunday at the UGA Performing Arts Center, and 13-year-old Alois Cerbu will perform Beethoven's Piano Concert No. 1 with the AYS.

An eighth-grader at Athens Academy, Cerbu won this year's competition to be the Spring Concert's featured soloist.

"We usually have between eight and 10 people enter the competition," says Karl Schab, director of the AYS. "The judges were unanimous in their selection. Everyone played well, but Alois stood out."

Cerbu - who plays cello in the AYS - began playing the piano at the age of 4 and took up the cello three years ago. He played in both the Clarke Middle School and Athens Academy string programs and has had private training from Peggy Randolph, Liana Embovica, Eunice King and K.C. Commander. Cerbu also came in first place in the 2009 Georgia Music Teachers Association auditions and won the Billy Shepherd Composition Competition four years ago.

For his audition, Cerbu played Beethoven's piano concerto.

"It was selected by him and pre-approved by me, because I knew we were capable of playing it," Schab says.

The 120-member orchestra, whose middle school and high school-age members reside in 15 counties ("As far south as Macon and as far west as Gwinnett County," Schab says), also will play a medley of Rodgers & Hammerstein songs from "The Sound of Music" and "Capriccio Espagnol
